Go Kart Axles

Axles are usually about 3-3.5 feet with a 1 inch outside diameter (3/4 inch of inside diameter, excluding the tubing). They can range from about $30 to $50. There are usually two ¼’’ keyways that are offset 180 degrees. This relieves some stress, increases balance, and allows positioning of brakes, bearings, and hubs. Axles are normally made out of aluminum or steel.

The aluminum is beneficial because it is a light, yet sturdy material. However, steel is sturdier than aluminum, but can add more weight to your go cart and it can develop some rust. However, if you continue to maintain it properly, you can minimize certain problems with your go kart.

If you know you’re going to ride rough terrain, steel may be a better option for you. Buyers are usually satisfied with the quality of products made by any of the leading go kart manufacturers, such as Manco. If you’re interested in a used go kart, make sure to check that the axle has minimal or no rust.

Also, spin the tires to check that the axle is not bent. While the go kart axle is rotating, if you can hear the bearings, that means you’ll need to change them soon.
